"Nubi grosse e dense correvano nel crepuscolo verso oriente. Tre giorni prima, si erano gonfiate sull'Atlantico, avevano atteso il vento dell'ovest, e si erano messe in moto, lente all'inizio e via via più veloci, avevano sorvolato le acque fosforescenti dell'autunno, procedendo diritte verso il continente, e si erano sfilacciate sulle creste marocchine, per poi riformarsi a banchi sugli altipiani d'Algeri, e adesso, avvicinandosi alla frontiera con la Tunisia, cercavano di raggiungere il mar Tirreno, dove si sarebbero disperse."

"Large, dense clouds were racing eastward in the twilight. Three days earlier they had swelled over the Atlantic, waited for the west wind, and began to move, slowly at first and gradually faster, they had flown over the phosphorescent waters of autumn, they proceeded straight towards the continent, and had frayed on the Moroccan ridges, to then reform into banks on the plateaus of Algiers, and now, approaching the border with Tunisia, they were trying to reach the Tyrrhenian Sea, where they would be lost."
